#Radio Animation?

O.K. Guys here's one for the books.
Being familiar with ground loops in Video and all the problems that can cause
I've been following the same rules for setting up my network. So all equipment
uses the same leg for power, each machine is grounded etc.
The short of it is that when all five computers on the network are running I
hear low volume music eminating from them. Its like a radio station but ther
are no commercials, so it might have to do with "cable" which is wired into the
system.
But one of the machines is wired into a telephone line and recently after I
answered the phone it stopped.
Don't laugh. <g>
The sound is not localized and doesn't eminate from any particular computer but
is localised around where the machines sit. BTW if any one machine is off, it
goes away. And yes its quit amusing except at 1 or 2 am in the quiet of the
night. <G>
Its been intermittent but it wasn't until late one night I could actually
discern it as audible "radio" type signal.
Its like Muzak but even more annoying.
If anyone has some ideas on how to resolve this I'd be most interested.
The last time I remember picking up radio signals like this was with my secret
spy pen which had a tuning crystal. If you hooked it up to a drain pipe you
could pick up radio stations. Pretty cool when I was a kid. <g>
Thanks,
John
Wow!!
I think you have finally set the record straight for the books. At one time or
another there has always been that big question– Were all of your nuts and
bolts properly tightened. This one puts the icing on the cake.
Were you the one that started the rumor about hearing the radio frequency
through the fillings in your teeth while living close to a radio station? <G>
I really think you forgot to pull that CD called "ALTERNATING CURRENTS" by
SPYRO GYRA out of your drive.
Mike Morgan, CAD Forms Inc.
John's nuts and bolts being tight? No, I'm not going to comment on that one at
all.
Here's one for all:
I recently had a real problem with my TV/stereo system. Seemed every once in
awhile the system would take off and switch channels, raise and lower the
volume, change from TV to CD to FM etc, etc, all on its own when one of us was
simply watching a program. My daughter thought we had the "Ghost in the
Machine" My wife was nagging me about needing a new set.
Here's what happened. Several months ago I got a new VCR that had a very
directional IR receiver making the hand remote very sensitive. I fixed the
problem by going to Radio Shack and buying one of their remote repeaters. Now
these repeaters work rather well but they use radio waves for the link rather
than IR. At the same time I was doing some RAM testing and had the cover off
of my computer. I have one of my network slaves in the same room as the TV.
Well, I could be in another part of the house and everytime I'd access the hard
drive of that slave the radiation from the 33 Mhz. signal would affect the
repeater's receiver and execute some operational commands to change channels
raise the volume etc. This drove our family nuts for several weeks. One
evening during a long rendering I decided to watch a little TV. I was fighting
with the Ghost in the Machine and happened to observe I had left the cover off
the computer. I got up and bolted it down tight and the Ghost went away.
Back in the old days of computerdom, before the SoundBlaster was invented, we
used to have computer games that had purposeful loops in the hand-tuned
assembly code that would generate meaningful beeps and boops in a nearby AM
radio. I'm thinking in particular of a Star Trek game for the IMSAI 8080.
There are some of those fluorescent lamps that can go in an incandescent
sockets that can send out faux IR signals to your remotely controlled products,
too!

I have a set of those X-10 Powermids and when the vacuum cleaner or hair dryer
is running I can't send commands and channels start flipping. No computer
interference though.

Yeah well Mike, I take it with a grain of salt. I suppose if you give some
people an opportunity like that, its just too much to resist. <g> And I knew I
ran the risk of it being a joke. But you played on the joke in a mean spirited
manner.
Well if you're going to get involved in Guerrilla forum tactics, you're going
to have to be a lot smoother. For instance, for your antics to be plausible
you would have had to at least pretended to be interested. That way I can't be
sure whether you're making fun of me or with me. That way you could at least
giggle with your buddies at how masterfully you handled it. But the way it was
handled, its a clear decision in my favor. You K.O'd yourself.
And the really senseless thing is why, its was such an easy target?
Did I do something to you? I don't recall. We had a conversation on the phone
less than a week ago. Seemed amiable enough. So the only other logical
explanation is peer pressure. Well if that's the case and you want to go at it,
you're beat even before you start. Then its not even personal, its totally
irrational.
I don't know Mike, I'm kinda disappointed. I thought maybe you were above it.
John
John
John,
Wrong, I met no harm with this statement, I did not know that you were so
serious about your own radio station.<G> Actually after our phone call and
getting to know you a little bit I thought I could jump in on one of your
threads for a little laugh. As I told Don Landis I did not have a answer I was
just adding a little humor. Sorry if I spoke out of turn. My apology! If you
still have a problem you have my number, please, call me.
Mike Morgan CAD Forms, Inc.
P.S. I was trying to throw in a pun with the phrase "nuts & bolts" referring
to your computer not being assembled properly. Which could have caused your
radio problem.<G>
Well Mike, like I said, I take it with a grain of salt. I'd like to think it
was playful and we'll leave it at that. 🙂
John
You should contact your local PI (Private Investigator) and have them do a
sweep of your place for bugs (the wire tap kind) You are probably being
investigated by the IRS. <BG>
>> You are probably being investigated by the IRS. <<
Now Don, I probably drive the IRS nuts, but for the opposite reason, last year
they sent me a letter telling me I sent them too much and to file for a claim;
my accountant was shocked. <G>
John
>>my accountant was shocked. <G>
By your fireing him? I would have sent him packing as I yelled at him for being
a double agent. <G>
>> By your fireing him? <<
Actually that hadn't occurred to me, but being as he's an ex-IRS agent you got
a point. <g> No he's great, I'm lucky to have him. Its easy to overlook how
really important these guys are to our financial well being, especially for us
independents. So lets see when is Accountant appreciation week? <BG>
John
Now for the serious guess:
Do you have a nearby FM station transmitting tower? Say one that operates at
about 90.1 or 89.9 Mhz. These would be the nearest station channels that are
in heterodyne frequency range of the 90 Mhz Pentium freq. you now have. My
guess is that by coincidence you have created a tuned circuit that acts as a
very sensitive antenna for this station and have picked the signal up on your
network cabling. This FM station then beats with the 90 Mhz. local oscillator
in your Pentium and produces a lower frequency that can be radiated via your
modem speaker or MB speaker. Normally this phenomenon occurs with AM stations
but I have run across it with FM stations too because of some residual AM in
the FM signal. People have picked up radio signals in their false teeth and
other peculiar locations.
>> so it might have to do with "cable" which is wired into the system.
You maybe getting warm now. Cable systems often carry FM stations at the same
frequencies so they can be tuned by a normal tuner. Our cable co does carry
about 20 local stations here. But, why would you hard wire your cable TV
signal to your computer? Do you have one of those computer TV cards? TV in a
window? This also may be how your FM signal is getting into your computer.
Based on the disconnect evidence I still support my tuned antenna theory. A
quick way around this would be to insert a T connector in the network thin net.
attach a 1/4 wave of cable to the T. tune it for 90 Mhz. You need to take
into account the velocity factor for the cable you use on your network to tune
it properly as a 1/4 wane is not a 1/4 wave when working with coax. If you
need further help with this I can look up the Vel. factor and calculate the
stub length for you. A 1/4 wave stub is a dead short for a certain frequency.
These are pretty high Q so I would recommend making it a little long and then
snipping off 1/8 inch at a time until the music stops.
Now if you think this all sounds like BS you're probably right, but you can ask
Gus Grubba and he'll tell you this is a legitimate remedy assuming my guess as
to what is causing your mysterious music is on target. If this doesn't work
then I'm at a loss as to what may be causing it until I get more info.
Don,
There was no way that I could come up with a answer as detailed as yours and
its not that I did not believe John, I just saw a opportunity and went for a
little humor! As far as the RF noise, there has been many times where I have
experienced something like your what you are talking about, but I did not think
much about it at the time. Anyway good job as usual and you also did a great
job with the description on how to do Rotoscoping with the PAR.
Mike Morgan, CAD Forms Inc.
Damn your good!
Yes in fact we do, Z90 90.1 on your FM dial and that's just the kind of music
that I've been hearing, early 70's rock mixed with some contemporary stuff. I'm
REALLY impressed Don!!! Was that a flash of insight or what!
>> But why would you hard wire your cable TV signal to your computer. <<
Well I've got 3 monitors, one for SVHS one for Hi-8 and a SVGA, and they're
linked so I can do dubs in either direction. The SVHS is also a reciever, so
cable is wired into it, and I can take feeds to either Hi-8 or SVHS. But the
monitors also share with a Targa on one system and the Ill Pro on the other.
>> Now if you think this all sounds like BS you're probably right, but you can
ask Gus Grubba and he'll tell you this is a legitimate remedy…. <<
Hey it sounds right on to me. We used to do a similar thing with coax hooked up
to 1" to eliminate hum. Sometimes it worked and sometime it didn't. The
humbucker's you can get for video work on the same principle, but in the shape
of a coil.
I'm just going to have to go through the process but now this thing has some
direction to it. I can systematic go about eliminating the problem with some
insight. Who would have figured a 90Mhz Pentium syncing to a radio station.
Yeah I'm definitely impressed. Makes alot of sense to me. It sounds like I'm
getting occilation from several machines that have different components
reverberating in unison all at a very low level. If I can bypass the signal
feeding it or re-route it, I think I've got it. Its really eerie to listen to.
You're an Ace amoung Aces, much thanks.
John
> If I can bypass the signal feeding it or re-route it, I think I've got it.
Its really eerie to listen to. <
I wonder if a filtering UPS would influence the problem? . . .
— James — Choreo Motion —
>> I wonder if a filtering UPS would influence the problem? <<
You know that's a very good thought and the kind of thing that I'm looking for
in the way of a solution. I do have some form of filtering on my UPS along with
surge etc. so that does eliminate one potential problem.
And it does seem to be the correct approach; try to eliminate the antennae.
I've been trying to think of ways to stop the harmonics created from the
occilation of the components, but it seems like an impossible task.
I wonder when the FCC certifies a computer case how the manufacture designs it
in order to eliminate RF. I've been buying standard tower cases and it occurs
to me that this may be a part of the problem. I don't want to have to replace
them, but I may have to. And of course there's no guarantee that this will have
any effect if its the CPU's frequency or occilation that's causing the problem.
It Choas theory in action, find the butterfly and stop the typhoon. A little
like finding a needle in a haystack.
Thanks for your thoughts, I think you're on the right track, just not sure
where to go from here.
John
> Its Choas theory in action, find the butterfly and stop the typhoon. A little
like finding a needle in a haystack. <
I have trouble accepting Choas theory as an explanation for anything: It
ultimately suggests that life is without meaning. (Maybe I just don't know
enough about Chaos theory.) In your case, I would liken the problem more to
harmonic amplification.
As for FCC compliance, I think an RF signal is measured at various positions
outside the case to determine for which level of FCC compliance a device
qualifies. Usually just a good thick gauge of steel will get a Class B
clearance.
A filtering UPS may only be a place to start looking for a solution. If the
resonance is happening _after_ the power source, the UPS may not solve
anything.
What if you never find a way to stop the sound — is it really that bad? I
don't think it would influence the processing of data in any way (except for
sound capture, maybe).
— James — Choreo Motion —
James,
>> I have trouble accepting Choas theory as an explanation for anything…
Really. I think its a very interesting explanation for how things happen which
otherwise don't make sense. The idea that a little thing can have a profound
impact on the overall scheme of things is very powerful.
>> Life is without meaning. <<
Now there's a depressing thought. <g> Spoken like a true artist. I swear we all
deal with that issue on one level or another. I think the trick is to give life
meaning. By your values, your work and by caring, which I know you do.
Otherwise you're right, life wouldn't have any meaning at least on an
individual basis. I think it does in the overall perspective but sometimes it
doesn't seem very apparent.
I agree Chaos thoery doesn't explain that, but it does explain an order to the
universe which otherwise seems Chaotic. I find that reassuring and lends
credence to the idea that life does have meaning.
>> What if you never find a way to stop the sound — is it really that bad?
Its very disconcerting. Psychologically. I've had to listen to "I am the
Eggman" at least 15 times in the last two days. 🙁 No I am not the Egg Man,
and I'm no Walrus either. <g>
The plus side is that its pretty much solved except for one power supply and
one case.
Thanks for your thoughts and interest,
John
> Its very disconcerting. Psychologically. <
Indeed, its hard enough to work (or have fun) without the pull of unnecessary
distractions.
> The plus side is that its pretty much solved <
I read your note about the microphone. I hope it leads you to a solution for
the last case/power supply.
> Thanks for your thoughts and interest, <
I enjoy problem solving, especially when its not my problem! <BG>
— James — Choreo Motion —
Don,
Just as a follow up. I tuned the radio into the same channel figuring that the
computers and the radio would harmonize. The station is actually 91x, which is
very close, and sure enough the two occillate together. Amazing bit of insight,
interesting story about the Ghost in the machine. <g> That could be a modern
classic.
Thanks again, what luck that you would experience something as remotely similar
but with you TV, amazing.
John
Actually, the remedy is a lesson from my old ham radio days when I always had
to figure out what was causing interferrence in my neighbors TV, HiFi Radio,
Hearing aids and false teeth. I became quite skilled at tracking these things
down before my neighbors called the FCC on me. When I was 15 I had my own low
power (legal) broadcast station and the neighborhood kids all used to listen to
me announce and play records, including my wife. Now you know the real reason
I like Rush Limbaugh. He got his start doing that same thing about the same
time in life as me.
Don,
>> a lesson from my old ham radio days…. what was causing interference <<
Yeah well this is definitely a wierd one. Kinda like its been going on for
awhile but at such a low level, that I just kinda ignored it. But then the
rains came and I guess all the ions in the air had the effect of magnifying it,
and now I'm tuned into and I've got to take care of it.
I'll be working on it tonight.
So those stories about people's fillings really are true? Yeah well no one can
convince me there aren't still alot of wierd things about electricity et al.
That theoretical aren't accounted for. Looks good on paper in a controlled
environment but the real world is another story.
>> Now you now the real reason I like Rush Limbaugh. <<
What can I say about Rush? <g>
Don,
>> remedy is a lesson from my old ham radio days… <<
What impressed me most was the way you zoomed in on the cause. It certainly
seems very plausible. The thing about the remedy that may do the trick is if
the radio frequencies are using the cable as an antennae. But if the computer
cases are acting in that manner or something else is acting like an antennae,
like power cords or …. who knows, stopping the problem with be really tricky.
Its a unique approach to use a T-junction and add a "foot" off the line. What
we would do is just use alot more cable and loop it. The problem with that of
course is you get a lot more signal loss, than what your suggestion would seem
to provide. I know extra coiled coax is a common solution as are the
Humbuckers, but I've always found these remedies wanting somewhat as a variety
of things can affect ground loops and they ebb and flow to a degree.
I don't see a quick fix in the works, and I've got to finish this project by
tomorrow so I'll have to let it slide until the weekend. Fortuneatly its not
having any effect on the monitors or anything, but it is kind of peculiar.
So its not Rush's political viewpoint that impresses you, its his background.
I find Rush mostly interesting because he causes such a fuss with the media.
But I can't get started on politics cause I'll end up writing pages and pages.
Thanks again Mr. High Band Radio, may the RF stay in your tuner and your color
bars true.
John
PMJI,
I've been following this thread for a while and thought I'd mention that I
had/have the same problem only I know what's causeing it.
I purchased a new Supra 144i internal Fax/modem and imeadiatly after installing
it in my desktop I started to recieve WNFL which is an AM Radio Station here in
Green Bay which carries Rush Limbough also by the way…<BG>.
The Radio Station was coming in faintly over the Modem Speaker.
From my old Radio Days I knew this had to be because a cable was just the right
length as to be able to receive a 2nd or 3rd harmonic.
I meant to remove the modem but interestingly enough as soon as we got a little
snow on the ground it went away.
The Stations Tower is about 2 miles away across the River just east of me and I
suspect that it's due to the Radials buried in the Ground around their
antenna….as soon as the snow melts and the ground drys out I'm sure I'll be
listening to Rush again. <BG>
I have plans to upgrade from the 14.4K to a 28.8 so maybe this won't be a
problem.
Anyone got a recommendation regarding new internal 28.8 Fax/Modems? <BG>
Murph'
Thanks Murph,
I wish my situation was that simple. In my case its definitely the P90's in
their cases but its got to be a combination of factors, not just the P90's,
because I had them running fine for a couple of months with no problem.
I've disconnected the "cable" and other elements that I thought might be
contributing to it, and the signal is now weaker and harder to identify where
or what is causing it.
John
P.S. How do you feel about getting Rush on your modem. I don't think he has a
license to Broadcast on that medium. <g>
John,
>>> P.S. How do you feel about getting Rush on your modem. I don't think he has
a license to Broadcast on that medium. <g> <<<
How do I answer this and not take a political position….Hmmmmm
First of all Remember Rush Limbough is a Radio personality, his biggest value
to the radio stations is/was the fact that he _Sells_.
I find it extreemly amusing that a bunch of greedy Yuppi librals helped get
this guy started.
Sure many of his backers were conservatives from day one but he never would
have gone national without the Yuppi sell-outs.
How's that for labeling people…. <BG>
Personally I Agree with his point of view 70% of the time, sometimes he's so
full of himself I can't stand it so I don't listen as often as I used to. But
regarding important matters the man is usually right on.
You have to follow his logic over a couple of weeks to get a good sense of the
Man, then once you've got a basic understanding of his sincerety he's a lot
easier to understand even when he flies off on his over exagerations.
As far as politics goes I guess I've made full circle and I can't say where
it's going anymore.
Basicly I want Government out of my life..period!
I don't care if it's a Dem. or Rep. that's getting in my pocketbook or taking
away another little freedom…they can both stay oughta my life.
I've said this before the November Election and I'll repeat it again, the
problem isn't the President it's Congress! We've got to get them back to the
basics that this country was founded on and stop deviating for personal
political gain.
Perhaps with this "new" congress we'll see less interfearance with our lives
and regain more personal freedom.
We'll see….the countries in an upbeat mood because of the first republican
congress in 40 years and therefore I see much more optimistic decisions being
made by many of the business's I deal with.
Based on that I'd have to say that it appears were headed in the right
direction…just as long as it isn't extreemly right. <BG>
I've seen both sides of this coin and in fact could write a book about
extreemists on both the left and the right but I won't.
Therefore I'm going to end this before I start rambling.
Murph'
>> Perhaps with this "new" congress we'll see less
>> interfearance with our lives and regain more
>> personal freedom.
While there are alternatives, most people get their "news" from the main
stream sources and that means TV for the large majority. I also watch and am
sometimes really irritated by the slant that seems apparent.
Sometimes I get the impression that they are saying:
— How DARE the congress allow people to have free choice?
— How DARE the congress allow people to keep some money?
Unfortunately the press is not subject to a vote, like the Congress is every
two years.
Albert,
I agree with you regarding the mainstream press in this country.
I've had first hand experience with thier inaccuracies regarding reporting in
the past.
I won't elaborate but the press certainly does have an agenda and it is mainly
liberal. One could argue whether it is by design or because of similar
"educational" experiences. However the bottom line is the mainstream press is
more than 10 degrees to the Left on most issues.
See my new Book soon to be released: Titled "10 Degrees of Emotion". <BG>
Seriously though, I'm not concerned about the Mainstream press because they are
becoming less and less a factor.
We are in fact helping to make this so, we are talking about these types of
issues on CompuServe and Internet person to person without the "benifit" of
having this information "Filtered" for us by the MainStream Press. We are also
taking part in the Information revolution that is allowing more people more
choices as to how and where they are getting their information from.
This is very good!
Those sources that show themselves to be inaccurate or overly biased will
either be accepted or rejected by all thinking individuals.
"Some times you need the loyal opposition to point out as a bad example."
In other words to paraphrase a two thousand year old quote, "The truth Shall
set Us Free".
The Press in General know it's almost all over for them as far as being able to
control the perceptions in this country.
As more sources of information become available to more people even the
mainstream press will be forced in to truthfully representing events, "Facts"
as it were.
I know about how facts can be manipulated, in a former life I worked for Army
Security Agency and what I know about the manipulation of facts regarding the
60's and 70's can fill volumes, however other writers with much greater talent
have written about these things and they have almost become forgotten by the
present generation. I would've been concerned but….
You ask the present generation who Tim Leary or Abby Hoffmann was and they
can't tell you, however they can tell you how to get on the internet and
Compuserve and what forums interest them.
As we all continue to get connected to each other I beleive that on a person to
person basis we will become more tolerant as well as "educated" to the
similarities as well as the so-called differences between all peoples.
I'm afraid I'm going on too long about this and that we should probably take
this to the Take 5 forum before we overstay our welcome here.
Thank you for your thoughts albert, I guess the short form is "I agree!".
Murph'
>>P.S. How do you feel about getting Rush on your modem. I don't think he has a
license to Broadcast on that medium. <g>
Actually I think he does have a forum all his own here on CIS somewhere.
>> Actually I think he does have a forum all his own here… <<
Well what say we go over there and raise Cain! <g>
John
(Are you going to join us Murph'? ;^)
<actually I think he does have a forum all his own here on CIS> I think that's
true. Also heard that he met his wife via CBing (live chat) here on CIS!!
Anyway, there is mention in this string that when the snow melts and the
weather is warmer, Rush will be rcvd, once again, on modem via RF Interference
or harmonic amplification….<GAD! Does that have anything to do with Groundhog
day?> Okay, okay… I do have a particle of advice that may help. If upon
changing equipment location or specific equipment you suddenly find RF
interference, and after testing and checking and not being able to locate
source of problem: Check out structural beam locations in your space. They
often complicate RF harmonic distrubance, and simply by moving equipment out of
immediate location or angle of relationship to beams the problem is resolved.
Hearing I am the Egg Man, repeatedly, might cause psychological destabilizing,
if that continues, simply yell COO COOKA CHOO each time you hear it! Chaos
theory does not lead to the conclusion that life is meaningless. To the
contrary, chaos theory bears out cause and effect, sublime order and I can't
help but mention having actually smelled the breath of a walrus. the fact is,
and I admit it… Just took a break from a very long session in 3-DS, and this
string made so much sense to me and got me laughing <ROFL> so couldn't resist.
Besides, the comment about structural beams and overhead sprinklers, iron,
steel and all, is a fact.
>>… etc etc. I am the Egg Man, repeatedly, might cause psychological
destabilizing, if that continues, etc. etc. …
What the heck are you talking about? What kind of drugs are you on? <G>
Don: <Drugs> <VBG> you're not the first to ask. Clean as a whistle, just easily
amused. Alternately punished/rewarded for behaviour/attitude. Thankfully,
reward is starting to weigh-in more often. Don't think I could change, even if
I wanted to. However, old dogs can read manuals… arf!
The humbuckers work for a slightly different reason, but I don't want to get
into that now. The reason for using the 1/4 wave stub is based on antenna
theory of radio propagation. This is the problem you have to deal with. Its
not powerline spikes nor hum, its a transmitted radio station's signal. And,
we'll assume that the station is transmitting a legal signal. The problem lies
in your end as a receiver. The complete antenna in any receiver is comprised
of the entire circuit of the Ground (physical earth) the path to the
electronics (your computer network) and the wires extending from your
electronics. Now it's this area that the issue gets confusing since you view
your computer network as what it is, but, in this case I view it as a radio
receiver and all its associated components. A heterodyne receiver uses a local
oscillator to beat with the incoming radio signal from the antenna path
(ground-case-wires above the ground) and produce a lower frequency that can be
heard via a transducer (usually a speaker) The most convenient location to
"trap" and short out this offending frequency is in the connecting cables in
your network thin net which uses RG-58U. The formula is 468/ FMhz. x Vel
factor. For non foam coax is 66% and for foam it is 79%. So, the length of
the stub would be 3.428 feet. I would start with 43 inches and start trimming
a 1/4 inch at a time. Insert this T in your network as close to the pentium as
you can but between the two machines so as not to screw up the termination
impedance of the network if the terminows where. I don't think its the speakers. It seems like a 3 rd or 4 th level
harmonic. Like materials in the each tower are sympathetic at whatever
resonance frequency I'm hearing. Its about akin to the little crystal radios.
Sounds just the same. And its omni-directional and the biggest problem is that
my physical presense inteferes with the signal when I get close to what seems
to be the source. I bet if anyone knows what I'm going through you must. Its
exasperating to say the least.
I can handle the power supply thing without too much trouble I think. Although
that's easily half a days work. 🙁
So the main question at this point is where do I put the T's if I've got 4 of
these beasties sitting side by side. Would it help to relocate them? The RG58
is A/U. I don't know if that's foam core or not.
Say is there anything I can do for you? I really appreciate this very
specialized most esoteric help. Above and beyond the call of duty IMO.
John
John
I've been picking up local ship communications on a set of Powered Partner
speakers. The CD is off, but the speakers themselves are on. Got anything like
that on your system?
TedB
!^NavFont01F0007MGHHG9966D4
Hi Ted,
Thanks for the response, yes I do have a similar arrangement, but the speakers
are not the source, its actually the components inside the cases which are
harmonizing. Don got it right on the money, and its reassuring as it at least
identifies the cause.
It was really difficult to pinpoint. Sometimes from across the room it was
louder than when I was right up close to the machines, which is why it took so
long to identify. At first I thought it was coming from an adjoining suite,
because the sound has a very reflective characteristic. One late evening, with
the bay doors shut because of the rain, the volume increased and I realised it
had to be emminating from the computer cases themselves. And that was what was
so odd, because I'd try to pinpoint the source up close but there was no
central emmission. And then I realised its more like a projection, like what
one might imagine holographic music to sound like.
The music that I was able to discern with a little more distance would not be
distinguishable up close, just the normal hum of the computers and hardrives.
And I listened for elements of the sound in individual areas, but its the sum
total of the resonances at a certain distance. The strength of the signal
dependent on atmospheric conditions. We've had alot of rain and that seemed to
intensify it.
So it seems to make sense that the P90's or their occilation crystals are
somehow working in sync and causing different components with in the cases to
sympathize harmonically. Actually in a way I guess its like those audio
transducers that they used to put in water beds.
Anyway, thanks for your interest, may you not experience such bizarreness
although its been rather interesting. <g>

Geez John,
Maybe you can put a religious name to your new found reception and really get
down to making some money<G>.
Beats the hell out of a squeaky fan!

I think Ted had something! ….it's the SPEAKERS! While I'm working, I
like TOTAL silence most of the time but if I've left my speakers on and am too
tired or stubborn to reach up and turn them off I get
different low level sounds for different operations like,…linear array sounds
kind of like a xylophone,
screen redraw sounds like "AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH", delete all objects is
"Brrrrrrrrp", Rotate a lot of stuff
is Uuuuughhh but the strangest is Project save for large files which is a
barely audible "PppaaulliisssDeeaadd!"
I wonder if the open mic is sensitive to stuff like the Mensa forum (it's
full of hose heads who must produce a powerful force field or
something)……spirit of houdini?…
Gary,
The sounds you're describing, I've heard also, but they weren't coming from the
Speakers they were coming from the monitor. This was especially true with the
large Electrohome monitors hooked up to a Targa. That was ok. I could live with
that. This is a lot stranger! I unplugged my speakers. That wasn't it. I
couldn't pinpoint the source. It was kind of like walking up to something only
to see it vanish, except in this case as I approached the computers it would
vanish. And the delay for its return was several seconds. Anyway I think its
been solved, I had a mircophone (a black one) tucked behind a speaker which I'd
forgotten was hooked up to a Soundblaster and while I was looking around the
network cables, it dawned on me, that's about the time things started getting
strange. I still can't explain the result, but by disconnecting it, I solved
the problem. You might check out Don L.'s answer to. Regarding wavelengths and
network cableing. At one point I disconnected the network cables and that did
solve the problem but of course I had no network. That's when I discovered the
microphone. FWIW I've got alot of stuff on my console, so it was easy to
overlook.
Thanks though, I enjoyed your sound effects. Alot better than the ones I
experienced. 🙂
John
a microphone! A MICROPHONE!! after all this <sheeeesh> John, reading this
string has been invaluable. Sending check for the $100,000 mentioned would only
cheapen the experience. Don has been a great help to many on this BB. His
knowledge and sharing of very specific technical information is astounding. .
Why, only last week, he caused me to up a current budgeted acquisition from
$11,000 to $20,000 (and he was right!).
>> a microphone! A MICROPHONE!! <<
Well if you've read on, then you know, it only temporarily stopped there.
That's the thing about these things, this stuff takes the shortest path and in
this case it was a microphone, but I'm getting there, down to one unit,
hopefully.
John
P.S. I agree with Don on quite a few things, but for instance he likes IDE and
I like SCSI, so its not always clear cut. But I have no problem deffering to
his knowledge, especially when it comes to areas typically outside my relm.
Which just goes to show you can have differences of opinion and still help each
other out. 🙂 Definitely one of things I like about him most.
John, I've always been preferential to SCSI, and my only objection to the PAR/
TBCIV was that it required IDE… oh well. Haven't gone over to P5 yet, and
sniffing the horiz. line for any rumors regarding when P6 is going to hit the
market place. Seriously looking at a P5/100 with 128mg RAM, but as I said,
listening for rumblings of P6 is causing a delay. Good luck on your RF Purge.
Jeffrey
>> always been preferential to SCSI… <<
And the objective way to look at it is, does XYZ product with ABC approach
work. If it came down to buying an AG-7750 or a PAR, it would make sense to go
with the PAR even if it was IDE. But all else being equal I'd rather go SCSI.
In Don's case he use the Fast VM and IDE is the drive they've chosen to use,
and he also uses a PAR, so… 🙂
I've heard the same rumblings but it seems to me it won't be awhile for the P6.
We also have a radio station at 101 so I'm not sure a 100 P5 is going to help
any. <g>
John
>>In Don's case he use the Fast VM and IDE is the drive they've chosen to use,

Just to clarify, the choice to use IDE mode 3 drive on my Video Machine
computer was mine. FAST does not make recommendations about what hard drive to
use on the VM. IT does require either two SCSI-2 driver or 1 SCSI wide drive
for the Digital Player recorder, their Non linear editing board. I use both
SCSI-2 and IDE drives here on my 4 486-66 MB's. The fastest DOS drive is the
Mode 3 IDE and next is the SCSI-2. My SCSI-2 drive chain is on a DPT cacheing
EISA controller with 4.5 megs of cache. (No, I didn't buy this, too expensive
for my tastes, I won it in one of those drawings at COMDEX :))The slower drives
are all the other normal IDE drives, cheap but effective. I exclude the PAR
because it is really a special case and not easily compared to the dos drives.
Ok Don,
>> Just to clarify… <<
So you've explained that you made the decision to buy IDE, the real question I
guess is why? <g>
You know I can buy AV certified FAST SCSI-2's 2 gig for $649 and 3.5 gig
Fastcache Read-ahead Fast SCSI-2's for $1095 retail?
I know, I started it, so I may as well hear the answer. 🙂
John,
BTW everything seems to be operating Radio Free so I guess I can change the
heading to RADIO FREE ANIMATION.
>>but for instance he likes IDE and I like SCSI, so its {not always clear cut}.
That's right. I use both. On my EISA platform I use SCSI-2 drives with a
cache ctrl. Everything else is IDE.
