Getting Closer! Message #97601
Alex: I do have Dos 6.2 and have decided to temperarily "rem" out Smartdrv before trying something else. I had quite a few 3der's come to my rescue on this one and hope this at least narrows down the problem. Thanks for your imput. Jerry
Thanks Evan, your comments are informative. After asking around Autodesk about the Micron "recommendation", I came up with a few replies: The systems that were at NAB: Pentium 60Mhz 32MB RAM 540MB Hard Drive Diamond Viper PCI bus Video board PCI BUS IDE Cache controller w/16MB RAM Double Speed CD…
Philip, As stated in the reference manual, any of the geometry found on the CD rom under the Geometry subdirectory can be used by you and distributed. The only possible exception to this can be found in the R3 licence agreement under the section "Multimedia Software" which states that you…
#97584 Alpha Channel- Help! Message #97598
You're under the mistaken impression that 3DS "talks" to the alpha channel stage of your Matrox board. That's not the way it works. 3DS generates FILE alpha… it doesn't know anything about the alpha stage on the board. The file alpha is used by 3DS and other programs as compositing…
John, It was an item under the "What's New" sign-on message. Apparently CServe has put together a CD on stuff?? It is not much money and has the obligitory $10.00 usage credit. I forget the go command but it is probably "GO CD" You order it from the CompuStore. Fred

I heard that Robert Taylor did a benchmark of a DX/4 against a Pentium 66mhz chip, and the DX/4 came out 5-10% faster than the Pentium. You might want to confirm that with him. – G
Note that the dedicated gateway PC which bridges the LANtastic and AppleTalk/EtherTalk networks needn't be a 386, let alone a 486! If you have an old 286 with 2MB RAM and a monochrome display card in a closet somewhere that you've never gotten around to donating to a school or…
#97065 Beta Vibrant driver Message #97594
3DSr3 DOES work under Windows so long as DEVICE=PHARLAP.386 is added to the [386enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file (and, of course, that said PHARLAP.386 file is copied to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory). I believe that corrects the "real breaks" problem. A remaining problem is that unless a DOS program is…
#96914 INTERNET vs C-Serve Message #97593
From: Marion K. Marks Autodesk Software Forum · Take 5 April 18, 1994 10:18 AM
Gee, I dunno, I think the Comics RoundTable is pretty slick, if I do say so myself (says COMICS-ASST of GEnie ). And their SF section is second to none, with over a gross of professional SF novellists, actors, producers, etc. on-line at last count. Speaking of Lancaster, I HAVE…

I can confirm that if you use a .3ds file from the WCTK to produce an image or animation, you don't have to provide credit to the original source. – G

To clarify, there are zero restrictions on how an artist can use the .3ds files and texture maps on the WCTK in their work. Of course, reselling those files doesn't fall into that category. – G
Can anyone confirm that sample models on the WCT CD ROM in are free to be used without further credit to the original provider of the model. From reading the 3DS Advanced User Guide (pg 49) and License Agreement it seems that indeed these models may be used for publication,…

I'd like to use the f/stops for exposure. Depth of field is a whole nother matter, but something that's definitely crucial. There's been talk about a "focus" IPAS, but I haven't been able to find it. James
Eco-Rendering… Message #97585
Hello Nik, So there does look like there is a difference when hiding objects – not substantial, but at least you removed the page faults in you test. Now, in the Keyframer, I assume I'd use the HIDE button in the TRACK INFO, rather than the HIDE branch…. And then…
Here I am again. Howdy. I have an alpha channel output problem. I have the Matrox Illuminator Pro which has an alpha channel output. However, when I render anything in 3DS3 I only get a full white matte output from the Illuminator. I'm using the copter mesh included with 3DS…

Hi Jerry, I'm not sure whether you got an answer for your problem, however, I'll get my 2 cents in: Are you using MS-DOS 6.0 or 6.2? If you're using 6.0, then try and get a copy of 6.2. What happened is that Microsoft added a Lazywriter or Lazycache to…

Joseph, sounds like a configuration or hardware problem. We'll need a complete list of your hardware and the contents of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. The DX4's floating point unit is weaker than the Pentiums'. If you read PC WEEK and other magazines that cater to the "boring" buisness applications market, like Excel, Word for windows, etc… then I'm sure the DX4 is fine. Naturally 99.99999999% of the computer market is these integer based apps.…

My original post asked for an opinion of a DX4-100MHz vs the Pentium for use with 3DS rel. 3. I've read many reviews that would indicate the DX4 is every bit as fast as the Pentium 60MHz and less money. Another question – 3DS hasn't been compiled to take advantage…
