Peter, there are several problems. The most immediate is that the device names in your config & autoexec aren't the same; if they're not identical, the system won't recognize the CDROM. Your config shows the name as MSCD220 and your autoexec shows MSCD210. I don't know which one is correct…

Alan, good question, which is a nice way of saying that I haven't the foggiest! On my Sony and one NEC I've tinkered with, only CD audio worked. I'd assume that the sound effects, etc. meant for an audio board are specific to them, hence having to specify the brand/type…

You've got the latest version, Alan. There were some garbage copies floating around that MS itself was distributing, but they just plain didn't run. If you want to be sure you haven't got a corrupt copy, you can download CDEXT.EXE on CIS (Go MSL).

I don't have all the answers, but you might want to review Laser3.txt in Lib #4; it has a lot of info about installing and tweaking a Sony 7205 which is quite similar to yours. Hope it helps!

Richard, if you don't mind a buttinski, this is often a symptom if you've loaded Stacker to an existing system and have not changed the drive letter assignment (Stacker creates a D: drive, assuming you had only a C: before installation, and if yoour CD was D: previously, you've got…

Usually 4MB should be sufficient. If you're running Windows 3.1, and are having speed or memory problems, then 8 might be nicer but not necessary; but you can also limit slightly the memory SMARTDRV reserves if you have a decent size hard disk (it can use up to 2MB) and…
From: kevin kelly CDROM Forum · DOS, Windows, OS/2 December 29, 1992 12:05 AM
Well… sorta. The problem with MSCDEX is that it usually needs its buffers; depending on the drive and manufacturer's recommendation, that may be a substantial amount — often 15-30K or so. And other drivers associated with the drive, especially the audio drivers may require lots more (but that's a different,…

I don't have a source for an mscdex earlier than 2.20, sorry. Have you tried v2.2*1*? It seems to be the best of the later crop. Have you also checked any dip switches or other settings on the drive itself and looked for possible IRQ or DMA conflicts? If in…

The 535 is the internal version of the external drive Sony sells bundled as their Laser Library. There's a lot of info on the latter in file Laser3.txt in Lib #4. The LL prices, which include 6+/- software titles, are also in the file. That Sony line, while perfectly servicable,…

William, check file Laser3.txt in Lib #4 here; it should provide some help, specifically with the /D: and /L: switches for MSCDEX (common to almost all CDROM systems) and at least a pattern for switches that might work with the DAK device drivers (the file was written for a Sony,…

Rich, you can use one of the outboard TSR utilities like Popdrop or Mark/Release to do it without much problem, although I haven't had much luck if it's loaded high. If you have the capability to load high (386/486 with DOS5 and >1MB of RAM) and are just out of…

Rex, if you have the 'old' version of mscdex v2.21, it should work fine with sony_cdu v2.20(a). If you have a conflict it may be TSR's, although there have been a few extreme cases where people had to default back to mscdex v2.20. The newest revision of file laser3.txt can…

Randy, I have a partial answer to your question. Not all CDROMs are SCSI. Most are, if your include the Parallel-SCSI interface in the definition; but some drives, notably the Sony Laser Library (which is not technically MPC-compliant), have a proprietary interface. The latter should be fully compatible with the…

Robin, you might want to look at the PC Mag review of 10/29/91 for some info, especially on the CDU_7211, the external version of your 541. Among other things, it mentions that Future Domain made the SCSI interface for Sony on those models, so they might be able to advise…

FYI, Microsoft opened a new download service BBS about two weeks ago at (206) 936-6735. They also have the "new" version of MSCDEX there in a self- extracting file, CDEXT.EXE, but it's exactly the same as the version here on CIS that has been giving people fits. Sony has confessed…

Paul, given some of the comments here, I suspect that the "new" version 2.21 available from MS on CIS may be corrupt — or just plain FUBAR. Your better experience with the Creative Labs version seems to corroborate that. Unfortunately, my system configuration (486/33, Windows 3.0 [which I only use…
