I had this same problem before and went crazy. What it ended up being is that the objects having shadows cast upon had gourard shaded textures. Shadows don't appear on flat or gourard objects(unless they've updated it in r4). So make sure your textures are phong or metallic. ———-Will
Hi, There is a weird bug in it; I think. I tested it on 5 models and it worked perfectly, but another test model kept showing slightly odd normals. I'm not sure if it's the program or if the model has weirdness. I'm testing both now to find the answer.…
Try the Graphics Grogramming forum GO GRAPHDEV(Fractint, POV and other freeware raytracers) and the Computer animation forum I think has a section for modelling. You also should do a search for Real3D, truespace, Topas and all the 3D packages you can think of, elastic reality might turn up something. ———Will
SUS— OK, just build your models and animate as usual, the only thing you need to do is build a little gizmo for the camera and a little video post. The only tricky part is determining a good eye distance, too much and the image won't 'meld'. Setting: model lights…
I've made about 7 stereo animations with 3ds and it's possible without an IPAS, but takes alittle work. I learned my current method from a writer for 'Stereo world' a magazine all about stereo images. You may want to check it out. I remember hearing about a stereo IPAS at Siggraph.…
Mark, Thanks alot, that just made my work alot easier. Hmmm, it seems so obvious now. ——-Will
In autoexec put SET SCREENGRAB=YES Then in 3ds hit CTRL-Print Screen and type the file name with the extension you want. ————Will
I've written a program that does what I mentioned earlier (scales an object according to the normals of the point). It's not the fastest program, I wrote it in qbasic because I can crank stuff out of basic. If your interested just ask for it. If you've found some other…
Can MeshMath apply mapping coordinates? —-Will
Whenever I need to do this I make a copy of the mesh then scale it down very slightly and assign it a solid black material and the other outer mesh I give the wire frame tex. On something like the plane you may need to select groups of vertices…
Have you heard of the DPS Personal Animation Recorder? "You can record and playback full motion video and true color animation sequences"
Does the image have to be entirely created in 3ds or Max or can we fix the image with an image processor like Photoshop? Or use photo filters? ———-Will
Help: ASCII Map
Message #193248
Hi, Whenever I open an .ASC file the map is messed up. Specifically, if you've lofted a torus (or anything where the end reconnects with the beginning) in 3ds with mapping coordinates and render it, the texture will appear evenly spaced throughout the loft. But as soon as you save…
I think I have but didn't know of a use for it. I think I'll get it now and see if it can help me. —-Will
Hi Mark, >> I'd like to make a program that can export loft files
>> if you do get the toolkit and want to proceed in hacking the LFT files
Hi Grant, Thanks for the info. Do you know why they hide the format? ——–Will
#loft file info
Message #190397
Hi, I'd like to amke a program that can export loft files. Does anybody know where I can get the info I need to do this. Thanks—— Will
—-Hi The material is phong, correct? It might be that your face count is just too low. If there are only 10 faces per circumference then the faces will be evident. You might try making a hemishphere with more faces. Phong is a method to make a surface _appear_ curved,…
Hi, Any idea how much student upgrade pricing will be once it starts shipping? ——-Will
Thanx, I guess I'll know all about it when I get my upgrade! ——-Will
You can get student pricing at ThomasPatton and Associates tel: 1-800-826-0570. Call em up and they'll mail or fax you their student prices. they have 3DSr4 for $700! T.Pat. and Associates are in California. If you want someplace else call 1-800-525-2763 and ask for places with student pricing. ——-Will
Jonas, I don't have r4 yet, (within a week though). Is the script compiled or does 3DS just parse it? Is it invoked like regular IPASs?
OK, I'll go for it. My difficulty with Watcom is it has no editor and I didn't know exactly how to link and so on. Thanks….hopefully I'll have something in a month —————–Will
#how tough is programming
Message #186663
Hi- about a year ago I bought Watcom C\C++ to program IPASs. I don't know C or C++ but thought I could learn. Unfortunatly I can't figure Watcom out. I've done some simple programs using Borland C though. My question is; If I were to get the IPAS toolkit would…
You can go into the key info box and type in what you think a more accurate value is. Painstaking though. ————Will
I thought the $495 upgrade to MAX was a SIGGRAPH special. —————-Will
Can you give the name and number of that dealer because all the ads I've seen list a $300 upgrade to ver.4. ————Will
upgrade to MAX
Message #184566
I was told at siggraph I need to have ver.4 to upgrade to MAX. I only have ver. 3 and not much money; will there be a cheaper way to upgrade from 3 and how much is the upgrade to to MAX anyways? ——–Will
#why did shape twist?
Message #177053
I made a closed path 2D shaper and pulled it out of its plain in the lofter so it's 3D. But when I previewed and made the object the shape on the path would twist slightly so they did not match up where the lofting began. I did not have…
Hi Bruce————- For the cube you could detach each side into a seperate object and in the keyframer hierarchy each side to the base and the top to one of the sides and place the pivot point for each piece at it's 'hinge point'. Then you can just rotate each…
I've used the modeller in Strata Studio which is spline based; it is fun to work with. Runs on Macs though. I think Starta is $500 but a real good program. Has integrated metaballs and evrything, you don't need to pay another $300.
scattered shapes
Message #171187
I was building a model and had about 75 objects when I wanted to see what they looked like. I linked all the objects to one object and rotated that object for the preview. I saved the model, but when I started modeling again, everything was fine in the 3D…
I read in a book about computer graphics that said the programers of 3D studio were opposed to raytracing because it took to long and they believe you can achieve the same effects faster with raycasting. I don't know if the book is acurate or not but there it is.…

#Tuber prob.
Message #150132
I have an animation that uses tuber but when I have the linked pyramids rotate, the rendered image shows the skinning as flat. I mean, when the rendered cone bends, it goes flat where it bends and even goes inside out. I've reset 3DS and made some links and applied…

If you know the answer to Gavins question could you also tell me how to get my wacom UD 1212 tablet to work with 3DSr3. ————-Will
I've downloaded the demo of scalpal before but it cut objects in half if I was right. I need something that is just a 2D outline. I've written a program since though, it was easier than I thought. Thanks Bill and -G ————Will
#SLICING
Message #149709
Does anyone know of a program that can take a 3D object in .3DS, .DXF, or .ASC format and produce 2D cross-sections of it at various planes. I read that the skin IPAS will slice models into planes, and while this could be a difficult way to do what I…
>>technical term is for rendering an object with it's EDGES disturbed by the bumpmap
Good Idea, I'll see if it works! ————-Will
Hopefully. —Will
Yes, an 'ALIAS' search turns up nothing. I don't know the company that produces it so I'm looking in the 3D forums. Regards, ——Will
Thanks, I better work on my programming. ———-Will
#Alias Sketch
Message #2979
Hello— I need to find a forum for Alias Sketch. Or do you know somebody technically experienced in it? I'm trying to make sense of the catalogs and style guide files it makes to store scenes and geometry so I can have my models saved in the same format. Any…
#fisheye distort?
Message #145692
Is there any way to achieve a fish-eye-lens distortion in 3DS. I tried a high FOV, but I guess because it is scanline, planes were not wacked out like I wanted. Do I have to use raytracers for this effect? —————–Will
Bob, load oldcity3 and in the top view move the camera above the road intersection. Now move the camera in an arc and notice in the perspective window how it tilts, the horizontal moves to a different plane. If you were to move the camera 2 units in this model…
Robert You might have found a program to do it automatically for you (like Rayman) but if your going to manually move the camera and want convergence/toe in, the images will be wrong if you just move the camera. The reason is the quaterion mathmatics or something that 3DS uses.…

If your interested in working on Alias Power Animator and on fast SGI machines you can go to SDSU. They have a super computer center there and I took a class a year ago to work on Alias, but they also let you play with their reality engine (virtual reality).…
