shaper get shape
Message #97651
Wade, It's wonderful and new for me.! Thank you, Gary
Jamie, I worked with UNIX as a student, on lots of different hardware, Sun/Apollo/Stardent. I have never run any of the PC varieties. I'm not sure if 3ds would run under X but I doubt it – I think its just x86. Mark
If you want to composite or do effects based on the z-depth in the image, a depth buffer is the way to go. (you can bet that this'll be built into r4). Re depth cue shading, I mean the Distance Cue option in the Atmosphere dialog. – G
Mark, as you probably know, hardware and DOS environment problems are FAR from being my specialty. Hopefully one of the experts here on the forum know what's going on with your system. – G
Which UNIX have or you work with? Plus have you tried running 3D-STUDIO Under UNIX, or X-WINDOWS?
Yea, well, I was just saying I didnt find it that great. By the way heheheheh I have used it. Hmm, I havent seen the new NBC animation Damn, that sounds pretty kool.

#MEM Alloc. Error???
Message #97639
Gary- I decided to do a little house-cleaning on my machines and I think I cleaned a little too well. On my 486-33 network machine (No Key) I'm now getting a Memory Allocation Error, Cannot load COMMAND, System Halted error everytime I exit 3DS. I've tried reinstalling 3DS and even…
Matte objects and alpha composites in video post are exactly what I was referring to when I said split the render up into elements. Michelle's article is an excellent guide/jumping off point for doing this. 32megs is definitely the least useable amount of memory for 3DS. I would suggest swapping…
And thanks to you as well, Philip
Thanks for the info, Philip
Gary, Pardon my ignorance but why would you need to create a z-buffer depth-map and how would you use it. I take it this is different than an alpha matte which you'd use for keying. Also when you mention depth cue shading are you referring to turning atmosphere and the…
There's no direct way to do that, but there's a workaround. Make a version of your scene in which all the objects have white matte material applied to them. Then, set depth cue shading on, and set your camera outer atmosphere range to the extent of the scene (just outside…
#z-buffer info
Message #97617
Hi, Can anyone tell me how to retrieve z-buffer information from a frame – either during render time or embedded in one of the file formats studio supports?? Thanks, BITS
3DS2 out of env. space
Message #97616
When rendering via VIDEO POST I keep getting the OUT OF ENVIRONMENT SPACE error message when accessing external processes. I know this is not really a 3DS2 problem, but I figured someone else has come across this problem within #ds besides me… and hopefully someone can tell me a solution!…
Getting Closer!
Message #97601
Alex: I do have Dos 6.2 and have decided to temperarily "rem" out Smartdrv before trying something else. I had quite a few 3der's come to my rescue on this one and hope this at least narrows down the problem. Thanks for your imput. Jerry
Philip, As stated in the reference manual, any of the geometry found on the CD rom under the Geometry subdirectory can be used by you and distributed. The only possible exception to this can be found in the R3 licence agreement under the section "Multimedia Software" which states that you…
You're under the mistaken impression that 3DS "talks" to the alpha channel stage of your Matrox board. That's not the way it works. 3DS generates FILE alpha… it doesn't know anything about the alpha stage on the board. The file alpha is used by 3DS and other programs as compositing…
Note that the dedicated gateway PC which bridges the LANtastic and AppleTalk/EtherTalk networks needn't be a 386, let alone a 486! If you have an old 286 with 2MB RAM and a monochrome display card in a closet somewhere that you've never gotten around to donating to a school or…
I can confirm that if you use a .3ds file from the WCTK to produce an image or animation, you don't have to provide credit to the original source. – G
#World-Creating Toolkit
Message #97589
Can anyone confirm that sample models on the WCT CD ROM in are free to be used without further credit to the original provider of the model. From reading the 3DS Advanced User Guide (pg 49) and License Agreement it seems that indeed these models may be used for publication,…
#Eco-Rendering…
Message #97587
Hi John, I got 32 megs. I'm full up! I do the splitting into segments – a good suggestion. I have read the article Michele wrote about MATTE objects. Very interesting idea – maybe be worth a try…
Eco-Rendering…
Message #97585
Hello Nik, So there does look like there is a difference when hiding objects – not substantial, but at least you removed the page faults in you test. Now, in the Keyframer, I assume I'd use the HIDE button in the TRACK INFO, rather than the HIDE branch…. And then…
#Alpha Channel- Help!
Message #97584
Here I am again. Howdy. I have an alpha channel output problem. I have the Matrox Illuminator Pro which has an alpha channel output. However, when I render anything in 3DS3 I only get a full white matte output from the Illuminator. I'm using the copter mesh included with 3DS…
Gary: I'm looking forward to seeing it, also! We wrapped our final takes of the live shots last night, the rest is up to us and 3DS! Greg
Gary, 3ds? >> 3ds will have a 64K face or vertice limit no matter what. Visual Link won't help that. Look in the index of the 3dsr3 ref man under ".dxf … loading, merging, and tips". jonas[adesk]
Hi Jerry, I'm not sure whether you got an answer for your problem, however, I'll get my 2 cents in: Are you using MS-DOS 6.0 or 6.2? If you're using 6.0, then try and get a copy of 6.2. What happened is that Microsoft added a Lazywriter or Lazycache to…

The Audio Video Recorder by In:synch will allow you to convert .FLIs & .FLCs to the .AVI format. Give Jamie Carr (the Pres.) a call at (301) 831 5008. This software goes for something around $150…it's also the program I know of that will convert a series of COMPRESSED Targa…

Joseph, sounds like a configuration or hardware problem. We'll need a complete list of your hardware and the contents of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. If you like you could try a totally vanilla system, with a plain config.sys (files, buffers, statements only) and see if the problem repeats. If…

Mark: Do you know of any devices in a price range of around $1500. that I can record student animation from animator pro and 3D-STUDIO to S-VHS tape. Maybe a source for the idems. Thank you for your assistance, Stan Scott Computer Graphics teacher Apollo High School Owensboro, KY
/* Getting on PCGNet is a big priority for the Rendering Plant BBS. It'll be a little while before I'm comfy with the bbs software and the add-on to set up the mail grabbing event, but I hope to put it together before the end of May. If I can…
Kevin, Correct you are, mapping is preserved. I'm not sure about the SXP stuff. Good question, I'll have to check that out… Mark I'm back…SXP assignments don't go along. I don't know where that info is stored. Hmmm.
Thanks, John, I'll make these changes immediately! Gary
INSIDE 3DS
Message #97547
Greg, Just picked up Inside 3DSTUDIO release 3 book. Great job!! I have been looking for a book about 3DSTUDIO that shows practical tips and tricks and this is it. I have been working with 3DSTUDIO (the tutorials only tell you so much) and to try to figure it out…

#Dialogue Box Problem
Message #97536
When I pick a pull down menu, the dialogue box opens and computer locks up. Appears to be a config, problem! Does anyone have any ideas! I Have just loaded 3DS3 for the first time.
Gary, The colder the better buddy. I'm curious about the quality of the docs too. It seems that IPAS docs are designed to introduce you to the rudimentary ideas and the rest is up to you. Talk about expriments. Boy! I've put away DAYS just with spurt! Maybe I should…
This is most likely not a bug. If you've got smartdrive or any other cache installed and running, then disable write-back cacheing, or remove it altogether. Also, I suspect your controller may have something to do with this. Are you sure you have no memory conflicts? If you are POSITIVE…
Unfotunatly I cannot recreated on demand. It just happens sometimes. Ill try re-installing the program. Hope that woks. Thankfor your help Gregg Daly Graphix zone

Christophe, I've done something really amazing! I've managed to work up a large .prj file (shopping center) and "poof" made it vanish! I know how I made the project and saved it carefully with every group of additions but I'm not too sure about my "write error" majic! I'm SOOOO…MAD!…
