Cheers, John, Good to hear (see) your voice. How are you? Lot's of work? James
#97985 #What's new? Message #98129
Thanks for the greeting, Alan… I thought PAR would do the trick. I've been thinking about constantly as I sipped my tea and eat my scones. It's funny, but our British friends know nothing about it, at least in the places I visited. How much are you asking, Greg? James

I'm glad that DOF is being worked on. That's all that counts, to me! You guys are great. You really are! James

Only 42,000? I'll bet you could do better 🙂 Just kidding! That sounds AWESOME!! Very, very cool! Can you give more specifics on how it'll work? That's pretty close to real-time 🙂 You're giving SoftImage a run for their money (a lot of it, in comparison). Will you incorporate it…
#97634- #Eco-Rendering… Message #97946
Thanks for remembering this thread – 2 1/2 months old! I agree 32megs isn't enough and I should have more. But while I'm at it, a Pentium or PowerPC chip would help, as well as a hardware renderer. Maybe 3DS will incorporate a feature similar to the SoftImage system, using…

Thanks for the thoughts and depth of field, Phillip. I still wonder how complicated true depth of field would be to impliment. If 3DS could take distance messurements (?) from the camera and gradually apply and "defocus" algarythym (? again!!) to objects further and further from the camera, using a…
#What's new? Message #97939
Hello all, What's new? I've been away from the country and 3DS for about 2 1/2 months and am curious about new and interesting developments in the 3DS community. How as the PAR and MAX worked out? Any new IPAS3? What about the developers kit for IPAS3? I spent the…

Hello John, Now I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. One cannot import just a camera, can they? What about the subsequent animation? 2) The only problem with using the EXCLUDE as a scrim is that you end up using two or more lights instead of…
#Eco-Rendering… Message #97587
Hi John, I got 32 megs. I'm full up! I do the splitting into segments – a good suggestion. I have read the article Michele wrote about MATTE objects. Very interesting idea – maybe be worth a try…

I'd like to use the f/stops for exposure. Depth of field is a whole nother matter, but something that's definitely crucial. There's been talk about a "focus" IPAS, but I haven't been able to find it. James
Eco-Rendering… Message #97585
Hello Nik, So there does look like there is a difference when hiding objects – not substantial, but at least you removed the page faults in you test. Now, in the Keyframer, I assume I'd use the HIDE button in the TRACK INFO, rather than the HIDE branch…. And then…
#Eco-Rendering… Message #81316
Hello, One more question. My scene has now grown to about 100,000 faces. At no time in the short is every object in frame. Is there any value in "hiding" objects out of frame? Will it reduce render time at all? I just did a test frame and I'm now…

My Wishlist – Off the top of my head – 1) Be able to save just animations. It'd be great to have one complex "set" upon which I could import different camera moves, different actors, etc. 2) I'd love to be able to define the lights in degrees Kelvin, just…
Hello again, Another question: I'm outputting some frames of my animation onto paper, but I wonder what resolution I should use? I want the final printings to be really nice, printed on photographic paper. Possible?
#Color bands! Message #81104
No IPAS's. And I do have the dither true color set to Yes. I'll change that no, but I believe that it's the level of resolution in relation to it's colors – at 1024/768 with 65000 colors, banding occurs. At 800/600 with 16mil colors, no banding…
#Color bands! Message #80739
Hello Gary, Thanks for the help. I realized that if you can't see the banding effect I described, then it wasn't in the file, but in my display. Just to furter check, I loaded the .jpg file into Photostyler and saw that there was no banding in the file. I…
#Color bands! Message #79463
Hello All, I posted a message a couple weeks ago, and I think it got lost in the earthquake shuffle, so here goes again: I just changed monitors, and am getting a strange banding in my shadows. This shows up in all the images I've rendered myself, but doesn't in…
Hello, I just got a new Monitor (a Sony 1605, very nice!). But now when I view my renderings, I get a strange color banding in the shadow areas. This is only in 3DS, but I'm not sure what it is. I've had this problem before but now can't remember…

It can't find you VIPER.INI file, although I didn't think the VIBRANT drivers needed it. Anyway, make sure your VIPER path is clearly defined, or better yet, make a copy of the file and put it in the 3DS3 subdirectory. James

Hello Greg, PMJI off topic, but you mentioned last week that you had a BLUR IPAS… Is this the same one included in the Yost Group Disc Pack 1? If so or even not, I'd like to buy just the one IPAS – possible? Let me know, price too… James

#73581 MAPS and MATERIALS? Message #73629
Hey Stuart, Thanks for the info. Actually, I've been lucky enough to work in film for the last ten years or so, and I did work in lighting for about a year. You're right, it helps A LOT. I wouldn't mind going back and working in the camera department though……
Well, the alpha channel describes the transparancy (sp?) of each pixel. I'm winging it here but I believe it increases the antialiasing, which I need as now the labels (as .gif) come out clipped. But _why_ the alpha channel does this, I don't know. Actually, I'd love to figure out…
Hey Tom, I've got Photostyler 2.0 on the way – reading 32-bit .tga files is good news! The keyboard is great. I did the same thing as you did, piece at a time, just with a step or two left out. I now wish I had created my labels as…
The two computer setup is a great thing in many ways. If you can afford to have two good computers and two decent display cards, you're laughing. I spent a couple months TRYING to get OS/2 to work, but never fully succeeded. I think two computers is the answer to…
Well, don't get too excited. It doesn't work . I forgot that Photostyler will not read 32-bit .tga files. Oops. Well, I've taken a couple days off so I'm reading to start playing again. I'll let you know how it goes. James

Hello Gary, I am sorry. You're right about life being a turn away from forever. And it's especially hard to hear of someone so young (my god, he was my age). And trying to help… One day, one day, I dream… Oh well.

Hey John, Thanks for the help and suggestions. I've thought about using two different stereo meshes, depending on detail. That is a real possibility so we'll see. As for using .tga and alpha with my maps — AHHHHH! The fool that I am jumped right in and went nuts with…
Hello Steven, I wouldn't mind seeing STEREO.GIF. It wasn't included in a 3ds how-to book, was it? So would you go back and forth between AniPro and 3DS, checking each change as you went? I'm not sure how'd you work on two computers – would you swap disks with each…

Hey David, This is a good idea. I will rerender at a higher resolution and then crop the image. And then region fit… Hmm, I don't think that'll work because I've got two different maps (two halves of the whole). Then again, I could combine the map in PhotoStyler… You…
Hey Alan, Well, I said it was complex! The stereo is made up of two basic sets – the stereo front (with it's dips and sockets). Then it has a whole slew of buttons. I decided the easiest method would be to map all the labels for the buttons individually…

Hey Ernest, To answer: I have never experienced the INVALID NORMAL ARRAY and so I don't know how to fix it. There's lots of people on here that probably do know how, so if they don't just step in, try posting a message with this as the subject. As for…
#73002 3DS output to VHS Message #73144
Hello Andrew I just went through the process about a week or so ago – I think the thread is still active. It's called VTR SEARCH CONTINUES and is in section 5 or 6, HARDWARE. It's probably all still on CIS. If not, post a message and maybe some one…
Hello Phillip, I know texture maps used a lot of memory, but I didn't realize how much. Now I'm starting to think back on all the labels I made over the last couple of days and am wondering if I should have made them as .tga files instead of .gif…
Hey John, Thanks for your suggestions. I did exactly what you suggested, but (of course) it doesn't work. For on the thing, the front of the stereo is too big to get a detailed rendering of the labels, so I've had to render to seperate images (half of the front…
#MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Message #72976
Hello! Merry Christmas! I just wanted to drop a note to everyone on the Autodesk forum, thanking all of you for all your help and support of the last four months. I have grown very fond of all of you – every day it's exciting to wake up and rejoin…
Hey Phillip, I've actually found that the labels come out looking clipped for some reason. And I worked till nine last night creating the big "stereo face label" and quick rendered it and tried applying. Didn't work. The problem is, when I render, I have to be a such a…
Hey Alan, Yeah, there's no doubt that the labels look way better as independant objects, rather than texture mapped. The problem is – the stereo rendering uses 34megs worth of memory (all the button labels have been SUMMED) – that's TWICE as much as the rest of the scene! To…
Hello again, I'm having a conceptual problem that I hope you all will be able to help me with. I am designing a stereo reciever, and have created all the physical pieces. The next step is labelling. I've labelled all the individual buttons, but now I have to create all…

It may be the Vibrant driver but probably more an OS/2 thing. When you switch from one session to the next, I believe OS/2 saves the screen image. At the moment, it can't seem to cooperate with an application that uses the same video display without OS/2 controlling it (which…

Hey David, Thanks for the word of wisdom. I've always wanted to have some artist exposure, but maybe now is a bad time. Very busy and all. But your suggestions for playing with 3DS seem to be right on the mark. I've been working steady for 2 1/2 months on…

So David, Do you think it's worth my while to take classes in painting and maybe even sculpting? I wonder if anyone would have me, as I don't even have a high-school education in art. I mean, we're talking ten year old stuff. I guess I could be considered a…

Hey Joseph, Sounds like a problem I was having. What is your video driver setup? I've found the only way 3DS will run is in VGA mode for the MAIN-DISPLAY. Just don't ALT-ESC when rendering or in the MATERIALS-EDITOR. If you're desktop is running on the same video card as…

Thanks John, Most of my maps are photographically based – although I must admit that they're all using the .TGAs and .CEL on the CR-ROM. Hopefully I'm gonna get out this Christmas and get some new stuff to beef the pictures up. I thinking about the art classes, if just…

Hey Earnest, I'm running the VLB as well and it's a snap. Go to the DOS prompt, type 3ds vibcfg. After a sceen or two you get to the setup. Choose VIBRANT drivers for each of the MAIN, MATERIAL and RENDER display. Depending on how high you want you res,…
