#4921- Can't AUX? Message #5008
From: Ron Wodaski MS Win Multimedia Forum · Non-Tech Service December 16, 1993 12:43 PM
I think your problem may well be using IRQ 2. On an XT, IRQ 2 is OK to use, but on any more recent computer, IRQ two is used to access interrupts 9 and up. Having the SB on that interrupt can cause unexpected, and potentially unpleasant, surprises. Ron (not…
You might want to consider switching to Multimedia Viewer 2.0 to do your help files — all of this would become much simpler. I have heard Viewer described as "MS Help on steroids." Ron
The Windows SDK contains complete information about creating a screen saver, and there is a sample screen saver with source code that you can modify to create one of your own. I also have a book out, PC Video Madess, which has a .avi screen saver on the CD-ROM that…
#51450 double-sided needles Message #51503
I just connected the name; I heard about you from some of the folks I talk with at Autodesk. I write books about various topics, including 3D modeling. I'd be interested to talk with you about some material for a second edition of one of my books, Multimedia madness. Interested?…
#51447 VistaPro/fields Message #51502
If you get this thing going, would you send me email? I'd like to cover in it my book — I have a chapter on Vista Pro, and it would be useful information for folks. I recently did my biggest fly-through ever — 100 megs, 2.5 days to generate on…
I've used various screen capture utilities with 3DS, but all of them would only work when I used vanilla generic VGA drivers for the various screens. Seems there's not much out there that will work in the SuperVGA modes. Ron

I almost always convert my .fli/.flc files to .avi for playback so that I have greater control over the appearance and position. Ron

Looks like I missed most of your message. I don't know if it was a garble during upload or download, however, but I only got a few lines of your message and a bunch of %^#@(@^#$(^ stuff. I think I got the basic idea, however — that it's just a…
Indeo 3.0 is not out yet. The official word is that it will be out in August. I do know that, when it is ready, you'll be able to download it from the INTELLACCESS forum on CServe. You may have to check in there periodically if you want to be…

Thanks for that feedback. I will have to give it another try. ROn
I've found a few bugs in Compel myself, but overall I like the program — it truly is easy to create a MM presentation with it. I tend to use both Toolbook and Compel for most stuff, and I like the versatility of the combination best. The most important thing…
AVI to FLI ? Message #51358
Thanks for your interest. I have three books out: Multimedia Madness, which covers all aspects of multimedia, including animation, video, sound, MIDI, images, etc., and most of the current crop of hardware and software. PC Video Madness, which covers video from cradle to grave. How to use a camcorder, lighting,…

Actually, I've gotten into the habit of including a CD with all the books — when you are working with multimedia, it's lots better to have tons of storage space. No, I won't be at Siggraph; I hate travelling, and I hate the cost of hotels even more. It would…

From: Ron Wodaski Autodesk Software Forum · General July 23, 1993 11:18 AM
I received an evaulation copy of WinImage for my book on Virtual Reality, along with a demo program. However, the demo program kept running into GPFs, and, with the deadline approaching, I never had a chance to look into the reasons. It could, of course, have been problems with my…
#50705 3D Studio Books Message #50726
All of my books are from Sams publishing. They are in pretty wide distribution, but if you have any trouble just ask; we can get you one direct if necessary. Ron
There will be a future issue with an article on using 3D Studio with video; I don't yet know which issue it will be in. The article will be an edited version of a chapter I wrote for one of my books (PC Vidoe Madness, if I recall correctly). Ron
#3D Studio Books Message #50699
I've done one book — Multimedia Madness — which provides an overview of 3D Studio, but it merely builds on the tutorials that come with the program — it is intended as an intro for folks who do not already own the program. I also have some 3D Studio projects…
The most common problem you will run into with TGA file is when software uses something other than 24-bit color. Their is a fair amount of software out there that only supports 24-bit TGA. Ron

I've used Photomorph a lot, and like the implementation. It is a 2D morph package that runs under Windows. I've got a chapter describing it in my forthcoming (August) book, "Virtual Reality Madness." Ron
#50093 FLI/FLC SCREEN SAVER Message #50145
I have written a screen saver for Windows that will play AVI files. Now that you mention it, I think I'll add the ability to play .fli/flc files as well. I'll post a note when I have it done. Ron
#50077 AVI to FLI ? Message #50144
First, capture in the usual way to an .avi file. Then use VidEdit's File/Extract menu choice. In the resulting dialog box, use the list box at the lower left corner to select DIB Sequence as the file type. Enter a base filename. In Animator Pro, use POCO/Numpics menu to read…
Well, I was just curious. I don't drink or brew beer myself, but I keep running into all of these Seattle folks who brew beer… Ron
#49979 Pentium anyone? Message #50017
I wrote a book about Vista Pro, and obtained it directly from Virtual Reality Laboratories. I've seen it at Egghead stores, and I have also seen it from time to time in the mail order ads. I don't, however, have a specific source that I can guarantee has it on…
#49934 3DS Message #49966
I have some chapters on 3D Studio in three of my books; two of those books are already out in bookstores. "Multimedia Madness" includes an overview of 3D Studio, and shows it can be used to create 3D objects, scenes, and animations. "PC Video Madness" shows how to use 3D…

You have encountered a problem with the Diamond Speedstar drivers. I encountered similar problems (when Playing FLCs under Windows) that could only be resolved by running the SPeedstar in a more generic mode — smaller screen size, fewer colors. Ron

I had two Texel drives. One had the symptoms you described, and they got rapidly worse; I sent it back to be replaced. The second drive had minor symptoms that went away entirely with the upgrade. In addition to upgrading to 1.09 of the firmware, i also upgraded my Trantor…
Another Seattle micro brewery? Or are you a picobrewery (i.e., a home brewery)? Ron
Nice to see you, John. I just wrote a book that has several chapters devoted to an exploration of your handiwork. It's called Virtual Reality Madness, and will be out later this summer from Sams Publishing (a division of Prentice Hall). Why don't you email me an address, and I'll…

Well, surprise: there are lots of folks having problems with "the latest drivers" from Diamond. They apparently haven't done a very good job with the Viper's drivers, I'm sorry to say. I monitor this forum daily (although I am not a Nautilus employee), and I see a message from someone…
From: Ron Wodaski CDROM Forum · NAUTILUS PC July 15, 1993 11:43 PM
Well, I had the exact same problems you described with the Texel drives, and they didn't go away until I got the 1.09 version of the ROM chip. Ron
#49670 Video capture 2 FLI Message #49741
I haven't done any direct to FLI/FLC myself; I just export from VidCap using File/Extract as a DIB Sequence — I use Animator Pro to convert to a FLC. Ron
For what it's worth, I've been using the Virbrant Graphics drivers with my ATI Ultra Pro card, and the results have been both fast and rock steady. Have not had one single problem is hundreds of hours of use. Ron

I have seen similar problems on machines where the CD-ROM drive was beginning to malfunction; it is worse on some disks than others. After a time, all disk may become hard to read. Often, oddly enough, an upgrade of the ROM chip will solve the problem. If not, the drive…

#52295 M-Madness problem Message #52340
From: Ron Wodaski CDROM Forum · NAUTILUS PC July 8, 1993 7:18 PM
The problem was actually mine; don't blame Nautilus for *this* one. I omitted a critical line of code that caused the wrong .DLL file to be hooked in on some systems. Nautilus was kind enough to put a correct version on the subsequent month's disc. Ron

Depending on what version of SoundBlaster and CD-ROM you have, that may well be true. I don't have specs on the various CD's that Creative has shipped with the Sound Blaster, and I don't know what kind of CPU you have. If the machine can't hit 150k/sec at 40% of…

I wrote that application, and it sounds like a bug. I'll look into it and see. It's possible that the driver being called at that point is not installed on your system, however, and all the bug fix would do in that case is eliminate (and handle) the failure to…

Unfortunately, Diamond has not done a great job on its video card drivers for quite a while now; you are not the first to register the problem with the Stealth drivers. Ron

I was wondering if you had the full, retail verson of Toolbook somewhere on your machine, rather than simply multiple versions of the runtime. Having a toolbook directory on your path can cause problems, because TB can get confused about what goes with what — changes to the .ini files…

For what it's worth, I've tested many video cards in conjunction with a book I wrote (Multimedia Madness), and Diamond's drivers were problematic more than anyone else (including ATI). Those drivers could be the problem, and probably are judging from the "s316.drv" portion of the GPF message. Ron
#51714 Microsoft Viewer 2.0 Message #51749
From: Ron Wodaski CDROM Forum · DOS, Windows, OS/2 June 30, 1993 1:02 AM
Neither Toolbook or Viewer 2.0 is a tool for editing video. For that, you will need to use something like the announced but not yet shipped product Media Merge from ATI. I believe that Media Merge had some kind of demo offer over in the Multimedia forum, where you could…

If you mean Toolbook or viewer, you really need both. Viewer is best for titles that have a lot of text and especially if you require a text search engine. Toolbook is good for most everything else. It has excellent MCI integration. Ron

The Encarta movies *are* jumpy. I believe that play at a frame rate of about 8 frames per second, perhaps even less. Encarta was developed before Video for Windows, and does not use that technology — the movies are really some kind of animation. The reason for the low frame…
