#Forensic Rates
Message #156720
Could someone with Forensic Animation experience please give me some help setting a freelance rate? I am an experienced broadcast 3d animator, and this is the first forensic work I've been involved with. The going rate for commercial 3d in our market is from $65 to $200 an hour. The…
K> I'm still not used to the on-line world- it amazes me that I make a comment about a magazine and I get a return message from the Managing Editor! Your first issue was impressive, especially the Robyn Miller interview and the article on the state of interactive literature (it…
JNJ, Yeah, right. There will never be too many good ideas, only gluts of bad ones. Just take a look at what the big money studios are doing in the CD game business: B-movie quality films jammed onto computers with lame gaming tie-ins. The real quality games come from small…
Tell me about it. > I like Animation Master alot, especially the facts that you can buy additional copies for just $175 and it's available cross-platform. Version 3 for the pc is supposed to come out in a few weeks and be much more user-friendly (mac-like). They also have a…
jonas, Thanks, it sounds cool. Scott
Hi Michael, Thanks for the translate! I guess I should've figured that Medizin was medical. Oh well. Scott p.s. I heard that JFK once said, "I am a chocolate covered danish."

Whoops… My earlier post about QuickTime VR was based on some wrong information that I had read in MacWeek several months ago. It turns out that it WON'T be free. Here's the real info: "APPLE DEBUTS QUICKTIME VR– Apple unveiled its QuickTime VR developer's tool last week at the MILIA…
JNJ Have you thought about chucking it all and going to work for a gaming company? It seems that there are a lot of opportunities out there from the looks of Next Generation, Computer Player (my favorite CG game magazine), etc. I've been thinking about it, just waiting for my…
Greg, Caught the animation (and the credit line), looked great. Congratulations! What did you think of NBC's beta of Apple's QuicktimeVR? Someone told me that they had seen a VR using photographs on the Today Show, it sounded like the descriptions of QTVR that I had read. The actual thing…
Jonas,
Jonas, I don't know if you've seen how ElectricImage handles visible lights, but its pretty cool with control of the color of the center of the light and the glow. And how about shadow-casting omni lights (please)? Scott
Is reading German a prerequisite? If not, could you re-post this in English? I'd be interested in working in Berlin. Scott (I'm assuming this is a want ad, for all I know it could be a dirty limerick )
Danny, I'm no lawyer, but if the government went after every artist using graphical elements from money, they'd get nothing done. Wait a minute, maybe that is what's happening. I just did an animated background with hundreds of dollars falling through space.
> I have a mesh of a soap cake if you need one.
Didn't "Tin Toy" win an Oscar? Why aim lower than that? (By the way, IMO "Tin Toy" was better as a technical achievement than as animation- "KnickKnacks"(I think that was the name) was far better. Besides, that baby was the ugliest baby I've ever seen!) Scott
Do you mean a local center or available through modem? There's a center around here which runs Doom2 on a bunch of 486s. They seem to do pretty well- not much overhead. Scott
Greg, I've been getting by using the super black option and raising the ambient light to 10-20. It's not the greatest, but it keys. I'd love for there to be a way of generating negative black or being able to uniformly raise the luminance of a scene. Scott
Max, Just another idea (I always try to find a solution that gives me the least work!): If the text background that your client is using is a still, would it be possible for you to ask them if you could modify it (slightly)? I'm thinking that you could texture…
I'll second that wish! I can just imagine the possibilities of morphing between 2 Displacement Maps.
Don, If the PAR works for you and your clients don't mind it, then I see no reason not to use it. After all, there are different many different markets and client levels to go after. In my case (and possibly in the case of the others who have been…
I liked the theoretical discussions in InterActivity the most. It seems like most of the how-to articles I read seem to be too specific to one program or application. I guess I'm more into thrashing a problem around myself until it kills me or I solve it. I still can't…
Michael, > I'd be interested to see how you are doing this. How large are your 3 boxes in relation to the overall box? Are you able to keep the edges from developing angles where the boxes end and the skin begins? I had imagined that you were doing it…
Just out of curiosity, why is that normal?
Thanks for the answer, G (or is that ? I'm still new to on-line-ese). I'm ashamed to admit that I've been trying to get away with completely ignoring the Video Post section of 3ds since I output my animations as targa files to a dedicated system which does high-end compositing/effects.…
Hi Jonas (and Alan), Yes, Alan's suggestion does help me out (thank you, Alan). Maybe in the future I'll try asking for a solution instead of asking you to rewrite the program :). It does lead me to another question, tho. When you select something in one category (for example,…
Joe, Oops, I already went ahead and tried an image last night, before your reply. I hope that there's room for it. While I was uploading it said that charges were suspended during uploads. Is this true? because if it is then I'd like to try a larger flic.
Jonas, A related wish: why can't you work with selected elements in the editor like you can with faces, objects, etc.? Is there something specific to elements? This has caused me considerable headaches. Thanks, Scott p.s.- sorry about swamping you with all these messages- I've been off-line for awhile
#Yost Demo Tape
Message #147445
I have a :30 spot that I'd like to submit for your tape. Do you accept BetaSP? Should I send the finished spot with soundtrack? It's entirely 3DS- not even any edits. Had the good fortune of airing locally just prior to the Cowboys-49ers game (sure was nice to see…
#interactive ik rotation
Message #147444
Another wish: I could really use a way to rotate objects in the IK interactive mode. I created a mouse w/mousecord and used an IK chain of 20 small SKINned disks to form the cord. What a nightmare. I used a follow object, but the mouse would often jump from…
#Modified Object Blur
Message #147443
Am I using the Object Blur wrong? When I experiment with it I get a very pixelated image that doesn't look very realistic. I get a noisy version of the blurred object. If this is the way it is supposed to work then I have a wish. I would like…
Nik, Boy, does this thread seem familiar. Two weeks ago, just as I was doing the final render on this major project with a deadline of 3 days, my Pentium 90 started to dump out of a render with a parity error. It started out intermitantly, but soon happened every…
Michael, Are you sure that SKIN is the direction that you want to go? I just completed a 3 month animation of a PC playing basketball. I started out thinking that I should SKIN the cpu, but soon discovered that it's much simpler to make a heavily gridded cube, use…
Joe, I hope it's not bad luck to be asking this under this subject ("trash"), but I want to upload a large image and was wondering if there are any special instructions for a first-timer. thanks Scott
Jonas That was fantastic! It makes it seem like yesterday that I was drawing with a pen the size of a cucumber, getting random spikes across a finished drawing (do people today even know what they were?), animating with color cycling and trying to program a game on a TRS80…
JNJ, Did you miss this in Next Generation? "Now roughly 75% complete, Virtua Fighter 2 includes 2 new characters, runs at 60fps (twice the speed of the original) and can shift 300,000 textured polygons every second." I agree that its a pretty cool new magazine, have you seen InterActivity with…
Sanford, I know that everyone appreciates all the time and effort that you've put into the SC2K project. Of course nobody says it, but I will. Thanks. On that same note, I wish that someone would just take this and start it and end all of this endless discussion. Sure,…
Jeez, look what I started. When I first made an inquiry about the reflection in the sample image, it wasn't to start an argument. I am merely a serious, PROFESSIONAL animator (I really doubt that any animations that I have done would look like "they were done by a 5…

> It may seem simple to you, but it actually is a very complicated subject. Just because the initial responses to my views were negative doesn't make them right. Have you thought this out? Have you went to a mirror or reflective surface and experimented to make sure that it…
Aaron, David I apologize for any inaccurate assumptions I may have made, but I did warn that I was NOT a physicist in my first note. I think I have probably proven that pretty well by now : ).
Aaron, Hope I didn't seem too hostile in my last note, I'm writing under the influence of a cold. Yikes! I didn't think you'd get THAT detailed : ). I don't believe that this is entirely correct. While it is possible, as in your movie star example, it is not…

#O.J. Simpson Animation
Message #143704
This is a non-morbid request for any O.J.-related models anyone may have, especially a Bronco. I am currently building models of the murder scene and compound for news coverage of the trial. We don't have much of a budget, but would be willing to trade. We've recently started doing accident/crime…
IMHO THE most influential film is "Nightmare Before Christmas". There is no reason why a film this beautiful couldn't be produced with computers. It presents the perfect goal. By the way, if you've read any of the articles/books on the making of, you've seen the selection of different heads they…
#wireframe preview
Message #143702
My first wish: I need some way to quickly preview the motion of my animations for realistic timing. Color/quality are of little concern as opposed to speed of rendering. Another system I work on (Colorgraphics DP- anybody else out there?) allows you to build a wireframe preview which can run…
Hi Martin, thanks for the morph materials dissolve tip. I used it an animation the next day. I do have a problem with it as a solution to the problem Dr.S had: while it does alow you to dissolve the object up from transparent, the object still casts a shadow…
#Lenzfx
Message #142754
Just downloaded the Still.jpg image using lenzfx. Looked great, I probably want it/need it. but… It looks to me like the reflections are rendered incorrectly. It appears that the depth of field of the reflection is is that of the object it is reflected on, not the object being reflected.…
